FAQs
How do I know if I need to replace my Barnett crossbow string?
First, it never hurts to replace a stock string—even if it’s brand new. Stock bow strings almost always leave much to be desired compared to professional bow strings.
The most obvious signs that a string must be replaced are fraying, fuzzing, and broken or stretched strands. Strange sounds or a loss of performance are also signs that your string is on its way out.

How often should I change my Barnett crossbow string?
At bare minimum, Barnett crossbow replacement strings should be installed every two years. You may need to replace your string every few months if you shoot frequently. There are numerous other factors to consider, such as the environment in which you usually shoot and how you store your crossbow. When in doubt, change it out!

Can I install my own Barnett bow strings?
You can, but if you’re not 100% confident in your ability to do so, you should bring your crossbow to a professional to prevent damage to your crossbow (or yourself!). If you do decide to install your own Barnett crossbow replacement strings, the job will be significantly easier with a bow press (we highly recommend the Last Chance Archery EZ Green Crossbow Press).
What’s causing my Barnett crossbow’s string to break?
In order to determine the exact reason why your crossbow string isn’t holding up, we’d need to inspect your crossbow in person. That said, these are the most common causes of crossbow string breakage:
- You’re not using the right nocks.
- You’re not discharging it correctly.
- The bolt isn’t seated tightly against the bow string.
- Lack of regular care and maintenance.
- Poor storage practices.
- The crossbow is old and/or needs to be tuned.
What’s the best material for Barnett crossbow replacement strings?
Some Barnett crossbow models may be best suited to certain materials. Your personal preferences may also play a role. If you’re not sure which materials are right for your Barnett bow strings, we’re happy to provide a recommendation.

Do you build steel cables for older Barnett crossbows?
Unfortunately, no. While we can build strings for any model, and cables for the vast majority of models, we’re not able to build the steel cables used by older Barnett crossbows.
